Let, make, have, get, help- causing someone to do something

Let- allow someone to do something. Give permission

Make- force someone to do something. They have no choice.

Have- giving someone the responsibility for something

Get- convince/ encourage someone to do something

Help- assist someone with doing something

Let (allow)

Past- talking about a particular event

  • My dad let me go to the party.
  • My dad didn’t let me go to the party.

Present- talking in general/ habits

  • My mum lets me go out after dinner.
  • My mum doesn’t let me go out after dinner.

Make (force)

Past (an event in the past)

  • The teacher made me stay after school.
  • The advert didn’t make me buy the product.

Present (in general/ habits/routines)

  • Advertising makes me want to buy new products.
  • Advertising doesn’t make me want to buy new things.

  • My mum makes me clean my room every week.
  • My brother makes me help him with his homework.

  • My mum doesn’t make me clean my room. I am lucky.
Have

Past tense

Susan had her borther do her homework for her.
I had my friend tell me what happened at school when I was away.
We had our front door fixed.

I didn't have anyone help me. I did it alone.

Present   have/has + past participle

My mum has her hair done every week.
My parents have their teeth cleaned by the dentist every 3 months.


Get (convince or encourage someone to do something)

GET + PERSON + TO + VERB

Past tense
  • I was nervous about eating sushi, but my brother got me to try it at a Japanese restaurant.
  • The non-profit got a professional photographer to take photos at the event for free.
  • Kylie's new instagram photo got me to buy her new make up line.
